Despite what the thousands of jokes and punch lines say the desire to become an attorney is still admirable and the profession of practicing law is one of the most important and noble professions. Attorneys, whether they are small town criminal prosecutors from Nowhere, Indiana or a Chicago immigration attorney, protect the system and the system is what all United States citizens are governed by.
The system is not a perfect system, no system is, but if we didn’t have attorneys and others as guards then the system would not only be imperfect it would fail altogether. So if you have ideas about becoming an attorney then don’t shy away from just because you may be the butt of someone’s joke, at the same time if you want to practice law only because it is lucrative and have no real personal feelings toward the defense of our system of law then at least re-think your choice.
In deciding to become an attorney at some point you will have to choose a type of law to practice. There are many aspects of law to look into and you certainly don’t have to choose right away. Getting your law degree is not a short road and you will have plenty of chances to explore all the different aspects through different classes, internships and other explorations.

Two of the most well-known types of law practice are criminal and civil. There is criminal which includes prosecutors, district attorney’s and defense attorneys. Criminal law practice is the most limited areas to practice, there are just two sides and you can pick either one. Several criminal attorneys have switched practices and gone from a defense attorney to a district attorney and vice-versa.
Other types of law offer a much wider choice of area to practice. Civil, corporate, and immigration all have multiple areas that an attorney can put all of their focus on and direct their expertise.
